  • Obituary: Grandfather was the son of Thomas Wilson Door Markham, A Union Civil War Hero and Mary Ann (Hutchins) Markham. He was the father of Carleton Eugene Markham and Robert Wilson Markham Jr. He had 2 grandsons and 2 grandaughters He lived in Elmwood all his life,and died at age 80 in McDonalds Nursing Home,Indiana Ave Washington Park the day after Thanksgiving 1959. He was the brother of Evelyn,Ellis,and Lillian. He was the beloved husband of Hattie Mae Coombs Markham whom he married in June 1913 in West Medway,Ma, her hometown She died in June 1956. Grampa was a Spanish American War Veteran His Memorial Marker is here at Marlham Lot at Locust Grove Grampa worked as an elevator operator in a Providence downtown large building on Westminster Street and also for the L.W. Smith Grocers and Delivery Company. During the Great Depression he would sell apples on the street corner to help with bills and support his family. Grampa belonged to the Oddsfellows Lodge, and Sons of Union Veterans Civil War. Grampa was born on Federal Hill Providence in 1879 and was a member of Broadway Baptist Church at one time. He married Hattie Mae Coombs of West Medway in June 1913 in Community Church.Congregational there. Robert and Hattie moved to Elmwood Providence to raise their sons. Grama Kate also lived with them until her death in June 1935. My father Carleton, was almost 14 then. Grampa and Grama Markham were hardworking people who never owned a house or a car in their lifetime. I especially remember the Thanksgiving family gatherings and holiday times. Dad always remembered these special family times and importance of it. Dad always remembered growing up in Elmwood and how hard it was economically. Those lessons were always told to his family later on.
