  • Obituary: Grandmother came from West Medway Ma. and married Robert W Markham June 1913. She lived her whole life in Elmwood and then on Massachusetts Ave,Washington Park, She was the daughter of Katherine Hayden Langille Coombs who was born in Malagash,Nova Scotia Canada and Eugene Coombs of West Medway Ma. she was the sister of Arthur Valentine Coombs who was born 1880 and died 1896 age 16 years. Her Memorial is here at Locut Grove. She was the beloved mother of Robert W Jr and Carleton Eugene. Grandmother of four. Grama Markham took a college course in high school and French . She worked as a store detective in a Providence downtown store. Her oldest son went to URI for two years. Her youngest son went in on the Invasion of Iwo Jima in February 1945. When she passed away she was a member of People's Baptist Church,Cranston where she and her husband had brought their sons to worship and to have a Christian experience. Both her sons became very active workers and positive influences in this church. People's Church became the Markham family church and center for gatherings of special family times. Hattie was buried in her hometown of West Medway Ma where she had lived from 1883 to 1913. The COOMBS family lot is here,Evergreen Cemetery Grama Markham would make the trip with her mother Katherine Langille Coombs and Hattie's son Robert Jr back to Malagash Point,Nova Scotia about 1919-1921 to visit the family homestead there. Hattie was the maternal grandaughter of Alexander Langille and Christine McBurnie Langille of Malagash Point NS. Gram was a very dignified,compassinate lady who raised two fine sons. Her bringing them to People' Baptist Church Cranton near home was a wonderful mission.
