Born October 15, 1920, in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Dorothy (Thompson) Shields. Thea was married on August 7, 1944, in Bedford, to John Arthur "Art" Manning and they moved to Truro in 1947 to start the radio station, CKCL. They raised three children and she remained in Truro until her death. Thea is survived by her son, Jack (Sheryl Joyce), Brule; Gwen Savoie-Manning, Boquete, Panama; Ted, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Jonathan Savoie, Tokyo, Japan; Marc Savoie, Halifax; Chris Savoie (Annora Schoorl), Malmo, Sweden; Andrea Manning (Mark Hollis), Edmonton, Alberta; Charles Manning, Calgary, Alberta; Stephen Manning, Calgary, Alberta; Patrick Manning, Halifax; Landon Manning, Truro; Hayley Manning (Scott Maidment), Truro; great grandson, Alexander Hollis, Edmonton, Alberta. Along with her parents, Thea was predeceased by her husband, John Arthur "Art" Manning (1995); brother, Jack Shields (2005); special friend, Bill Spence (2006). Thea grew up in Bedford where she won numerous tennis championships and with her brother, Jack, were provincial doubles champions. She was also an avid sailor and swimmer. During the Second World War, she was a reporter for the Halifax Chronicle and she also took numerous photos of families so that they could send their pictures to their loved ones overseas. After moving to Truro in 1947 she continued with her love of sports and contributed to the community with her many talents of writing, music and sailing skills. She could be seen at the beach in the summer, on the tennis courts the spring and fall, skiing the slopes of Wentworth in the winter and traveling with Art to many places around the world. In the 1970s, Thea started a sailing school at Smith's Cove. This was her dream – to have so many people enjoying sailing and enjoying it safely and with good instruction. Thea was a fantastic writer – a humourist. She was called upon all her life to write skits, poems and stories and helped stage many functions and parties with her amazing wit. She was a unique person - always laughing, having a great time, telling stories and playing music – the piano, accordion, clarinet, ukulele and the famous "gut bucket". She was famous for walking on her hands across the grass – which she could still do in her 80s. Gratitude is extended to the staff of The Mira Nursing Home for being so loving and caring to Thea. They made sure that she was very comfortable in her last years. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. A funeral service will be held in July and announced at a later date. If so desired, donations in Thea's memory to Alzheimer Society or a charity of choice are welcomed.
