During the four years that she was confined to her bed due to failing health, she was tenderly cared for by her son, George, his wife, and family who resided with her. Born at Mahone Bay she was the former Ethel C.L. Hirtle, youngest daughter of the late John D. and Judith (Strum) Hirtle. Before her marriage, she taught school in a number of rural communities throughout the county. Possessing a rich soprano voice of rare quality, she was heard to advantage on many occasions in her younger days. She was a devoted church worker, having served as a Sunday School teacher, organist, and choir member in both United and Baptist Churches in her community. Her membership in the Women's Institute spanned forty-six years. Surviving are one daughter, Judith (Mrs. John Mader) of Barss Corner; two sons, George and Fred, also of Barss Corner; two brothers, Dr. A.G.G. Hirtle of Bridgewater and W.H.G. Hirtle of Mahone Bay; fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband and eldest son, Carmon, in 1955. Funeral service was held on Saturday, October 28, at the United Baptist Church in Barss Corner and was conducted by Rev. Alexander MacPherson, assisted by Rev. Carol Armstrong. The hymn selection was "Softly Now the Light of Day" with Mrs. Nelson Veinot at the organ and the choir in attendance. The pall bearers were four of her grandsons, namely George and Burpee DeLong and Peter and Neil Mader. Interment was in the Barss Corner Community Cemetery.
