  • Obituary: SCOTHORN, Alfred James \emdash 83, Hardwoodlands, passed away Febru-ary 2, 2011, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Nanaimo, B.C., he was a son of the late Reginald and Edna (Kelly) Scothorn. Alfred was a proud and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. Alfred was a well -respected farmer who developed Scothorn Farms, beginning in 1947 and developed Alf and Jean's Christ-mas Tree U-Pick. After he sold the farm to his four sons in 1975, Alfred and Jean did a two-year term in Swazi-land, South Africa to help develop a farm there. He belonged to many farm organizations; being a founding mem-ber of Farmer's Dairy Co-Operative; a past president of the Shubenacadie Co-op, past president of the Nova Sco-tia Milk Producers Association, mem-ber of the Nova Scotia Christmas Tree and Woodlot Owners Association, also member of the Farm Debt Review Board. He was a member and elder at Hardwoodlands Presbyterian Church. Alf is survived by the love of his life, Jean Marie (Lacey), with whom he shared 62 wonderful years; his sons, Michael (Denise), Shubenacadie East; Gary (Eileen), Hardwoodlands; daughter, Janet (Jeff) Everett, Monc-ton, N.B.; daughters-in-law, Marlene Scothorn (Ken), Scotch Hill; Nancy Lee Scothorn (Peter), Milford; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchil-dren; sisters, Norma Howlett (Art), Enfield; Frances Frame (Donnie), Gays River; brother, John (Gail) Scothorn, Hardwoodlands; aunt, Marg Kelly, Truro; numerous nieces and ne-phews. Alfred will also be sadly mis-sed by his faithful companion, Buddy, and a large circle of friends. He was predeceased by sons, Reg and Donnie; daughter-in-law, Nancy Ann; brother, Reginald; brother-in-law, Reg How-lett. Cremation has taken place. Vis-itation 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Saturday, Feb-ruary 5, in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Hwy. 2, Shubenacadie. Funeral service 2 p.m., Sunday in Shubenaca-die United Church, 2869 Hwy. 2, Shu-benacadie, M. Dale Crawford officiat-ing, assisted by Rev. Gwen Roberts.
