Brewer , 79 PORTLAND - Helyn L. Brewer died on April 10, 2009 at age 79, in Portland, due to complications of lung cancer. Helyn, the eldest daughter of Dorothy and Frank Manzer, was born in Presque Isle, on Dec. 14, 1929 and lived in that community almost her entire life. She graduated from Presque Isle High School and later received her degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Helyn was a teacher at several grade schools and middle schools in Northern Aroostook County. Most notably, she taught 8th grade English at Skyway Middle School in Presque Isle for over 20 years, prior to her retirement in 1993. Helyn, a prolific reader and member of the AAUW Book Club, also had a great love of music. She was a longtime member of the choirs at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Caribou and St. John's Episcopal Church in Presque Isle, as well as a longtime member of the Caribou Choral Society. Although putting her artistic endeavors aside while raising her family, Helyn resumed painting after retirement, to the delight and amazement of friends and family, who had not previously realized how artistically gifted she was. Helyn is survived by three siblings, Nancy R. Jones of Sequim, Ore., Franklin L. Manzer of Old Town, and Victoria L. Andrews of Des Moines, Wash. She is also survived by her aunt, Georgie Morse of Woodstock, New Brunswick; several cousins; and many nieces and nephews. Helyn will be greatly missed by her three children, Letitia J. McMullin and her husband, Joel of New Gloucester, Mary Elizabeth Knox of New Gloucester, and Bernard C. Knox, Jr. of South Portland. In addition, Helyn is survived by one beloved granddaughter, Jennifer Helyn Clayton, of Yarmouth, and her fiancé, Todd Meier. Helyn is predeceased by her two husbands, Bernard C. Knox, Sr., who died in 1974, and Paul D. Brewer, who died in 2004, both formerly of Presque Isle. A private memorial is planned for members of the immediate family.
