  • Obituary: Trenholm, Mary Ellen (Peers) - A long time resident of Gulf Shore and Pugwash passed away peacefully January 12th in her home at the Gulf Shore. Born Nov. 8th, 1915, at her Gulf Shore home, she was the daughter of the late Alec and Maggie (MacLeod) Peers. There is one more star in Heaven & her family are thankful for her 96 years while here on earth. She has gone home to be with her beloved Hudson & our Lord Jesus Christ. She was an adherent of the Pugwash Presbyterian Church. She worked for many years as a telephone operator in the village of Pugwash, several years at Tupper Smith's 5 to a Dollar store in Pugwash & several years at the Sunset Adult Recreational Center as a seamstress where she retired in 1980. To many she was known as "Mae". Mary had a great love for her family & friends. She always kept busy. When she wasn't working or raising her family she enjoyed reading, quilting, knitting, baking, crosswords, and a good game of cards. Mary also enjoyed sports & never missed a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game. She enjoyed listening to the music of Dean Martin. As a young woman she played on an all women's hockey team. She was one of the mothers that lobbied for the building of the new Pugwash High School in the 1950's. She believed in setting a good example & was loved & respected by all. Mary was a very caring person, willing to give or help when she was asked. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother & great-great- grandmother. If you count her 9 children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren & great-great-grandchildren, (the latest born on Oct 2nd 2011), making him the 100th offspring whom she cuddled many times. Her grandchildren knew her as "Old Nanny". Mary is survived by her sons, Hudson (Mary Lou), Pugwash; Alexander "Sandy" (Nancy), Port Howe; Charles "Dig" (Joy), Casey Road; Peter (Myrna), South Pugwash; Edison (Fran), Victoria; Daughters, Dina (Marius) McCullum, Hay River, N.W.T., Nancy (Joe) Webb, South Pugwash, Heather (Andrew) Cunningham, Gulf Shore, Virginia "Ginger" Trenholm (Douglas O'Hara), Wallace ; adopted daughter, Janice Pettigrew, South Pugwash; sister-in-law, Bernice Trenholm, Pugwash, several nieces & nephews. Mary was both mother & father to her younger children. She was predeceased by her husband, Hudson Alfred Trenholm in 1959 & by an infant child; sisters, Mildred (Peers) Smith; Dorothy (Peers) Grant; Clara (Peers) Sarson; brother, Charles (Pete) Peers; brothers-in-law, Henry I. Smith, George Grant, Donald Sarson & Captain Sheppard Trenholm. Creamation has taken place under the direction of Mundle's Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (243-2506). A private celebration of life & graveside committal will follow at a later date. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
