Page 1 Article - SAILORS PRAISED - MAN OFF BRIDGE, RESCUE IN VAIN Two young signal men, of HMCS Bonaventure have been commended for their efforts in trying to save the life of a Parrsboro man, Paul W. Krumrei, who fell off the centre span of the Angus L. MacDonald bridge yesterday morning. John Gladden, 21, of Montreal and fellow Quebecer, Robert Marshall, 20, were 42 feet above the water on the flight deck of the carrier when they heard a man had fallen off the bridge. "John said he was going in after him, so I just followed," AB Marshall said after the rescue. They stripped off some of their clothing and jumped into the chilly harbour waters from a couple of decks below. "He was about in mid-harbour, something like a quarter of a mile from the ship. John got his head and I helped support him as we swam back to the ship," Marshall said. A naval fire tug put out from Dartmouth to assist in the rescue bid, and the man was hoisted aboard in a life preserver. The man appeared to be unconscious and a naval ambulance was waiting to take him to the Victoria General Hospital. The man was dead on arrival. The two young men took life-saving instruction during their three years in the Navy. "John got his bronze medal but I flunked mine," Marshall said. The two were highly praised later in the day by a spokesman of Halifax Police Department. "They acted very well. Unfortunately their efforts didn't save the man's life," an officer said. Both men were wet and shivering when they got aboard the carrier after their swim. "The water was pretty cold, but I guess the tot we had just took the chill off it for us," Gladden said. Born at West Bay, he was the son of Mrs. Gerald Willigar. He served in the Canadian Army for three years, serving overseas during World War Two. He was a member of Branch No 37, Royal Canadian Legion at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Chambers and children, Elizabeth, age 9; Paulette, age 8; Ella Jean, age 5; Rickey, age 4 and Cathy Ann, age 1 1/2 years. His mother and sisters, Evelyn, Winnipeg; Shirley, Australia; and Beverly, Halifax also survive. Funeral service was held from Christ Church, Parrsboro Roads, on July 7, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Father Schultz officiating. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion were pall bearers and held a memorial service at the graveside. Burial was in the family lot at Parrsboro Roads.
