Notes

  • Obituary: The death of Dorothy Geneva Doncaster of Withrod Drive, Halifax, and formerly of Port Hood, occurred Dec. 29, 1998, in New Halifax Infirmary, QE11. Born in Joggins, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Porter. She was a member of Port Hood United Church. Cremation has taken place under the direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Hillsborough Cemetery, Cape Breton. (Parrsboro Record) "Urias Jr. Willigar was married to Vivian Porter but at the same time was having an affair with Doris Porter. Doris was my mother. I was adopted by the Bentleys." (Morley Bentley, 2 Oct 2000) "Doris Geneva Porter was born in Strathcona, Cumberland County on June 22, 1915. Her parents were John (Black Jack) and Alice (Bruce) Porter. Mom passed away at the QE 2 in Halifax, on Dec. 28, 1998. She and Vivian were sisters. Vivian was born Nov. 21, 1909 in Joggins at the home of her grandparents John William and Susan (Gould) Porter. Grampie John Will cared for the livery stables of the mine officials. There was another sister Gladys. Gladys also born in Joggins on June 25, 1911. She went to Mass, USA. at the age of 15. She married there. She died 1996. Vivian died in 2000. Now for a long story - Dorothy versus Doris. Following the birth of my full brother Elden the Children's Aid placed Mom on a farm in East Leicester. If I remember correctly the names of the people were McElmon. Mrs McE. was a Doncaster and Earle happened to be visiting or working there. He and Mom had a relationship of some kind. However, he joined the army and went overseas. It must have been a short stint. On his return he married a Sydney girl due to some previous promise (or family pressure). I gather that as soon as the marriage took place it quickly ended. I heard it rumored that the marriage was not even consummated. -Rumors! Rumors! When Mom found out he was married she, on the rebound, married Russell several years older than she. Alvin was born and soon after Earle return to Leicester. The relationship was renewed. Kencil who was killed in 1973 was, I personally believe to be Earle's son. Gladys is hard to tell she resembles the Bruces very much. Frances is definitely Doncaster, Ruth ???? the youngest, Ralph, of course, no doubt. He was born after Mom left Russell. I know his obituaries lists these children as his ----- I have my ideas and I'm not alone. Frances spoke to me once as to what I thought and she agreed with me. I see from above I neglected to say Mrs McE. was Earle's aunt. When I would mention the Cumberland County Doncasters, Earle would always say there was no connection ---- figure that one. Alvin's Hunsley cousins whom I know quite well all call Mom "Aunt Doris". Mom always claimed Earle didn't like the name and wished to call her Dorothy. I didn't appreciate it when it appeared in print that way and I always called her Doris. Vivian's family also called her Aunt Doris and Aunt Gladys the same. Frances looked after the final arrangements and some of us were disturbed with the obituary, burial, etc. I conducted her committal in August 1999 and Frances has not communicated with me and several others of the family since. I miss Mom very much. We became quite close. I learned to recognize and read between the lines. For someone who was tossed about from the age of 3, that was when her mother left ------- becoming a teenage mother etc. etc. she developed into quite a person. It took a long time to dig it out. This brook had better dry up ----- this is a long story to what could be said in one sentence ----- Earle didn't like the name Doris and it could have been one way Mom was trying to forget the past. Cheers, Morley." (Morley Bentley, 4 Oct 2001)
