  • Obituary: Halifax Herald 5/9/2007 MANNING, Elizabeth Lovett "Betty" - Of Chester and Kentville, died on Friday, May 4, 2007, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. She was born in Chester in 1916, a daughter of the late Carroll and Ada (Smith) Manning. The Manning family owned Lovett House and her parents owned the Hackmatack Inn in Chester. Betty grew up having a varied and interesting youth in a hotel environment. The Hackmatack Inn was later purchased by the Norwegian Government for use by Norwegian sailors during the Second World War. Betty attended school in Chester, Edgehill in Windsor, and was a nursing graduate from Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She served in the British Army during the Second World War as a Nursing Sister in Africa and England and as a representative of her nursing unit was presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth (our present Queen's mother). After the war Betty served as Public Health Nurse in Windsor, the nurse at Edgehill School, Public Health Nurse for Lunenburg and Queens Counties, and as Night Supervisor at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium in Kentville. Betty was a dog fancier and bred CKC registered Miniature Pinschers under the kennel name Applea. She was an Honorary Life Member of the Evangeline Kennel Club and for many years taught dog training classes first for the Kings Obedience Club and then for the EKC. Betty was a well-known person on the Maritime dog show circuit, both in conformation and obedience classes. She will be remembered fondly for her kindness in helping newcomers to the sport. Betty is survived by cousins, Kathryn Bowen, Halifax; Elizabeth Wiswell, Yarmouth; Elizabeth Hodges, Chester; and Ralph Hennigar, Mahone Bay. Cremation has taken place under the direction of White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, and there will be no visitation by family request. A memorial service will be held in Saint Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, Canning, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, Rev. David Garrett officiating. In memory of Betty, take your dog for a walk and make a donation to your local SPCA, animal shelter, or to the Valley Hospice Foundation (46 Chipman Dr., Kentville, NS B4N 3V7).
