He was born in Welsford, Pictou Co. He was a son of the late John and Maude (Langille) Reid. He and his wife, Alice, made their home on the Gunn Road, Welsford, and then in Pictou and Stellarton before they moved to Scotsburn. He was a grader and snowplow operator and worked for various construction companies throughout Nova Scotia, retiring at age 70. Merril was a skilled operator, taking pride in the roads he helped to build and enjoying the people he worked with. His ability to repair and reconstruct was unsurpassed. He enjoyed his annual hunting trips to Cape Breton with family members. He was a dedicated family man and will be remembered by his family and friends for his storytelling and good sense of humour. He was a loving husband to Alice, who predeceased him in 2001. He is survived by daughters, Ruth (Wayne) Drew, River Denys; Joan (Russell) Graham, Scotsburn; son, Robert (Isabel), Abercrombie; sisters, Helen Logan, Pictou; Jean Henderson, Stellarton; brothers, James and Everett, Welsford, as well as seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in MacLeod's Funeral Home, River John. A celebration of his life will be held today at 2 p.m. in St. George's Presbyterian Church, River John, Rev. Jeanette Fleisher officiating. Burial will take place in Hamilton's Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made in his memory to St. George's Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or Canadian Cancer Society.
