She was born in Malden, MA on May 11, 1924 the daughter of Harry E. and Hazel G. (Cowdrey) Barnes. She had been a long time summer resident of Mt. Sunapee, NH before permanently moving to Sunapee NH in 1995. Prior to 1995 she lived in Malden, Plympton and Holbrook MA. Just recently she and her husband, John resided at the Woodlawn Care Center in Newport NH. Prior to enlisting in the US Army Medical Corps during WWII she responded to her patriotic duty to enter the workforce and became a part of the woman's labor movement "Rosie the Riveter" making airplane parts. She served in the US Army Medical Core from 1944 to 1946 when she was honorably discharged. In 1947 she married John K. Fisher, Sr. of Quincy MA then moved to Holbrook MA. Along with raising 4 children she was a foster Mom to 44 babies from the Boston Children's Friend Society which later became The Home for Little Wonderers. She was a Master Fiber Artist of Rug Braiding which she enjoyed for over 60 years. During that time she taught classes in MA and NH including The Dorr Mill Store and hosted many braiding Get-A-Ways. She also owned and operated the Braided Rug Shop first in MA and then in NH selling braiding supplies, wool and her lovely commissioned work. Barbara became a juried member of the League of N.H. Craftsmen in 1964. She was the recipient of many awards including recently the 2013 Governors Arts Awards for Folk Heritage from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. In 1999 she was invited to represent New Hampshire arts at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC. Members of her family surviving include her husband of 66 years, John K. Fisher, Sr. of Sunapee, NH; four children and spouses, Janet and John Fitzgerald of Harwich, MA, Linda and David Robinson of Duxbury, MA, Marjorie and Lari Bell of Newport, NH and John and Diane Fisher of Newport, NH; 11 grandchildren, Tom, Dan, Kelly, Kristen, Derrick, Casey, Joshua, Rebecca, Janet, Jill and David, Jr.; 12 great grandchildren, Fiona, Alexis, Kayla, KJ, James, Kendall, Rylie, Chase, Payton, Declan, Jack and Luke; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London on Monday, March 17, 2014 from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at 12:30 P.M. Burial will be in the spring in Eastman Cemetery, Sunapee, NH with military honors.
