  • Historical Information: WOODBURY, Mary Johnson, BA, MA - Mary Woodbury, only child of C. Russell Johnson and C. Dorothy (Hawkins) Johnson (of Halifax), was born on August 20, 1923 in Halifax. She was educated at Sir Charles Tupper School and the Halifax Ladies College. She attended Dalhousie University from which she obtained her BA (English and History) in 1943 and her MA (Psychology) in 1967. In 1943, she was married to John Francis Lydiard "Jack" Woodbury, MDCM, FRCP, FACP (1918-2005). Since 1944, she had been a member of the Junior League of Halifax. She volunteered her talents and leadership expertise on numerous projects that were undertaken to demonstrate their need and feasibility to benefit those in the Halifax community who were less fortunate. She was the president of the Junior League 1950-1951. Other volunteer activities included: canvasser for the Community Chest for several years, member of the Executive of the Dalhousie University Alumnae, Commissioner of Extensions for the Girl Guides of Canada, and member of the Committee of Management of the Old Ladies Home (more recently named Victoria Hall) for approximately 40 years and served a term as the 19th President. After obtaining her MA she worked until retirement for the Department of National Defence as Clinical Psychologist at Canadian Forces Base Hospital, Halifax. After her retirement she became the Registrar of the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology 1993-1996. She was a member of the Antiquarian Club, the Historical Society of Nova Scotia, the Junior League Sustainers Book Club, Bridge Club and Garden Club. She was an Honourary Member of the Canadian Psychological Association, the Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia, and the Junior League of Halifax. Despite her many volunteer and occupational pursuits, she devoted herself to supporting Jack, her husband of 60 years, and her family in their pursuits and participated actively in their activities. Her performance of handstands at family picnics contributed to family fun and fond memories.
