  • Historical Information: Jack was born December 22, 1918, in London, England, where his father was serving as Lieutenant Colonel in the First World War. He was a son of the late Dr. Frank V. Woodbury and Frances M. (Lydiard) Woodbury. Jack attended Tower Road School and the Halifax County Academy. He obtained his B.Sc and MDCM from Dalhousie University, graduating in 1943. Jack was in the COTC and upon graduation he became a Captain in The Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Following his army career, he spent five years in general practice in Halifax before pursuing postgraduate studies in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine at the Toronto General Hospital and Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. In 1953, he returned to Halifax, joined the Department of Medicine at Dalhousie University and was appointed Chief of Rheumatology at the Victoria General Hospital. Jack became the first rheumatologist to practice in Nova Scotia, as well as the first Medical Director of the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society of Nova Scotia. He established the first Arthritis Outpatient Clinic at the VG and promoted a team approach for the care of patients with rheumatic diseases. By 1969, he had become full professor in the Faculty of Medicine and was appointed the first Director of the Rheumatic Diseases Unit at Dalhousie University. For 20 years he was a member of the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Council, working for the establishment of the Rehabilitation Centre. Other positions included President of the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society, 1958-59 and Chairman of the Executive and President of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia 1971-72. He was a member of the Senior Advisory Committee of the Medical Society and the founding President of the Society of Atlantic Rheumatologists. Jack was active as a Director of the Nova Scotia Division of the Arthritis Society for many years and served nationally on the Medical and Scientific Committee of the Arthritis Society of Canada. He was appointed Honorary President of the Dalhousie Medical Alumni Association, 1995-96. Jack was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honour Society and Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity. In 1986, he received the Distinguished Service Award of the Victoria General Hospital Medical Staff. His medical publications included scientific accounts of Rheumatic Lung Disease, evaluation of respiratory function in Ankylosing Spondylitis and several treatment evaluations. At the request of the Nova Scotia Government he studied Coal Miners' Pneumoconioses and advised on government policy in Workers' Compensation for this disorder. He worked with eminent researchers on animal models of arthritis. In 1994, he was appointed Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University. At the time of his retirement in 1989, with the support of the Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia, he was honoured by his many colleagues, patients and friends by the establishment of the JFL Woodbury Lectureship in Rheumatology. This was in recognition of his contribution to teaching, research and clinical care. The Lectureship brings outstanding individuals in the field of Rheumatology to Dalhousie University for the continuing education of the faculty and the benefit of those who have Rheumatic Diseases. Jack had many interests and hobbies. His enthusiasm for them enriched the lives of his wife, Mary, and their family. Jack loved to play tennis and did so in spite of having developed arthritis at the age of twelve; a hip replacement eventually terminated this activity. He enjoyed gardening, bridge, theatre and music, and was an accomplished photographer. For several years Jack was President of the Board of Directors of Milford House Properties Limited, a holiday resort where the family spent many happy vacations, the memories of which are cherished. He was an avid reader and had an extraordinary fund of information. His welcoming smile and his remarkable sense of humour will not be forgotten.
