Notes

  • Obituary: Edward Gardner Fisher, 86, of Kalispell died Friday, Aug. 16, 1996, at Community Medical Center in Missoula. He was born Aug. 11, 1910, to Roy Washburn and Mattie Gardner Fisher near Victor on what was then an extensive apple growing project known as "The Thousand Acre Ranch." He attended grade schools in Victor, Hamilton and Missoula. After his father's death in 1924, the family moved to Missoula and a year later to Bozeman where he graduated from high school. He attended Montana State College in Bozeman, graduating with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in June 1932. His work as an engineer took him eventually from Montana to Anchorage, Alaska. While in Alaska he met Eleanor Tierney. They were married Feb. 13, 1954, and remained happily married until her death in Kalispell, Jan. 26, 1993. Ed worked for the Federal Aviation Administration in Alaska for more than 30 years before retiring in 1970 as chief of the program management branch, airway facilities division. He then moved with his family to Kalispell. He was skilled in carpentry and cabinetry, as well as engineering, and completed many projects in his workshop. Following his wife's death, he became an enthusiastic participant in the Elderhostel Programs for senior citizens. His curiosity knew no bounds. He and his brother, John, attended numerous programs in the United States and abroad. At the time of his death, Ed and his brother were enrolled in Elderhostel programs in the coming months in Oregon, Antarctica and New Zealand. Ed will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. He was the source of extraordinarily wise and kindly counsel to all of them. His children, Nancy and Joe, will particularly miss their "Poppa" who, among many other things, instilled in them his lifelong love of reading. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a sister, Katherine Fisher. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Fisher of Stevensville, and son, Joe Fisher of Kalispell; one sister, Virginia Spangler of Great Falls; one brother, John Fisher of Bozeman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be conducted at the Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20. Memorials in his name may be donated to the American Cancer Society.
