  • Obituary: MacPHEE, Shirley Margaret "Shirley Doug" - 80, Elmsdale/Nine Mile River, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Hardwoodlands, she was a daughter of the late John and Ruth (Custance) Tanner. Beginning her teaching career in a one-room school, Shirley taught for over 30 years until her retirement in 1985. She was an active member and leader in her church, community, Women's Institute, Blueberry Quilters, and 4-H. In 2003, she brought together people from the surrounding communities who loved to sing, and formed The Communities Choir. She was a loving and thoughtful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She faced every challenge with quiet courage and determination and will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. She is survived by her children, Brian (Betty), Shubenacadie; Earle (Bonnie), East Gore; Margaret, Lockhartville; Marylee (Greg), Enfield; Beth (Ron), East Noel; Ruth (Tim), White Settlement; Darrell (Ellen), Lower Nine Mile River; grandchildren, Jo-Leigh, Mark (Crystal) Sheldon, Carmen, Blake, Kelsey, Jordan, Chris, Leslie, Michelle, Darren, Holly, Chantel, Justin, Shanda, Alex, Kenny, and great-grandson, Isaac; brother, Earle (Blanche) Tanner, Hardwoodlands; sisters, Joyce (Bill) Brown and Jean (George) Ellis, both of Truro; brother-in-law, Owen (Phyllis) MacPhee, Enfield; sisters-in-law, Pearle Neil, Upper Rawdon; Audrey Delvecchio, Centre Rawdon; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Douglas Carl MacPhee, and grandson, Densmore in infancy. Visitation 6-9 p.m. today in Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, with funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, in East Gore United Church, Chuck Patterson LPM officiating. Interment in Sand Hill Cemetery, Nine Mile River. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to East Gore United Church or a charity of your choice.
