Evelyn was born to Lavinia Lombard and George Washington Phillips on November 4, 1911 in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Katherine Gibbs School and became the private assistant to Otis P. She was a dedicated volunteer for the Grenfell Mission which was a medical and religious mission founded by her friend, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, to help the poor in northern Newfoundland with clothing, food, and medical care. In later years, she was assistant to the dean of admissions at Wellesley College. Evelyn met the love of her life, Gene Lockhart, through mutual friends at a Boston Red Sox game. They were married for 70 years. They moved from Boston to South Natick in 1947 where they lived for 33 years before retiring to Chatham. In 2006, they moved to Columbus, Ohio. Evelyn loved to read and often quoted words of wisdom from Shakespeare. She was an avid gardener and was admired for her beautiful perennials and vegetables. An excellent seamstress and knitter, she made many beautiful things for her family and friends. Cooking was her specialty and she was well known for her delicious pies. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Evelyn will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, dedication to family, intelligence and hunger to learn, and for being a lady. Evelyn was the beloved wife of the late Eugene Morris Lockhart. She was predeceased by her four brothers Wadleigh B., Clark A., Ronald L., and Sumner W. Phillips and her twin sister Esther L. Phillips. She was the loving mother of Marcia Lockhart Ruma and her husband, Charles J. Ruma of Columbus and Richard Eugene Lockhart and his wife, Rosemary Inglis Lockhart of Lowell, Massachusetts.
