Notes

  • Obituary: Eugene Morris Lockhart, age 94, passed away on July 26, 2011 after a short illness. He was the son of the late Alfreda Mae Dimock and Fletcher Morris Lockhart. Gene was born in Newport, Nova Scotia on September 1, 1916. When he was five years old his family moved from Nova Scotia to Wellesley, MA. He graduated from Wellesley High School with honors and was a star athlete in hockey and baseball. After a year of college he joined the United States Army. In 1942 he married Evelyn G. Phillips and they made their home in South Natick, MA. Gene was an avid gardener, growing special vegetables and raspberries. He followed the Red Sox and the Patriots and was passionate about reading; he was known to read two to three books a week. He loved golf, which he took up at age 65, and shot his age when he was 82. His other hobbies were refinishing furniture, fishing and listening to Big Band Era music. In 1980 he retired and moved to Chatham, MA and lived there until coming to Columbus in 2006. Gene will be remembered as a loyal friend to many and for his natural ability to fill a room with warmth, humor and intellect. Most of all, he was a devoted husband who loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Evelyn Phillips Lockhart; his children, Marcia (Charles) Ruma of Columbus, OH and Richard (Rosemary) Lockhart of Lowell, MA; along with six grandchildren, David (Shannon) Ruma, Charles (Brooke) Ruma and Jenny (Clint) Bova of Columbus, OH and Amy (Chris) Green, Sarah (Ben) Atamian and Jessica (Shawn) Flynn of Lowell, MA; ten great-grandchildren, Turner, Caroline (Evie), Lauren, Alexis and Joseph of Columbus, OH and Trevor, McKenna, Beckett, Samantha and Adyson of Lowell, MA. Family will receive friends 5-7pm Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Upper Arlington, OH 43221; private family interment Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to the Salvation Army, 966 E. Main St., Columbus, OH 43205, in Gene's memory.
