  • Obituary: Baird, Mary Catherine (McLellan) - 59, Truro It is with sorrow and regret that we announce the passing of Mary on November 16, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Mary was born March 15, 1950 and was the younger daughter of Judge Robert F. and Helen (Stuart) McLellan. Mary battled her cancer the same way she tackled anything in life ?" straight up and head on. During these past nine months she traveled, enjoyed the company of family and friends and in general made the most out of a short period of time. Mary graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1972 with a BA. She also attended Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario. Mary was an avid golfer, twice holding a four handicap and representing Nova Scotia in numerous Canadian Championships. She also held the club championship of the Truro Golf Club on twelve occasions with seven of those years being consecutive. During the winter, Mary was a curling instructor and participant. In 1967, Mary was a member of the curling team that represented Nova Scotia in the Canada Winter Games, 1977 the province of New Brunswick, curling in the Lassie and in 1987 the province of Nova Scotia (Truro Curling Club) in the Scott Tournament of Hearts. She was past-president of the Truro Curling Club, Ladies division, past-president of the Truro Golf Club, Ladies division. Mary served on many committees at the Truro Curling Club and Truro Golf Club. She co-chaired the 100th Anniversary of the Truro Golf Club in 2003. She also served on the Nova Scotia Golf Association. Mary was active on the local and provincial boards of the Canadian Cancer Society, serving as chairperson for the local door to door campaign covering Truro, Bible Hill and surrounding areas. Mary was an elder of the First United Church, Truro and thoroughly enjoyed the committees which she served on and chaired. Her favorite time was spent with the girls on Tuesdays ?" crafts and conversation which included cross stitch, paper tole, Swedish weaving and many other crafts. Her summers were spent at the family cottage in Folly Lake where she loved entertaining friends and family which was done with a smile and a "what''s next". Mary is survived by her husband, Vincent; sister, Melinda J. MacLean Q.C., Old Barns; niece, Johanna Catherine (fiance Douglas Webber), Ithica, New York; brother, C. Peter McLellan Q.C. (Christine A. McCulloch Q.C.), Halifax; nieces, Jessica and Emily, Vancouver, BC; nephew, Thomas, High Point, N.C. She is also survived by nephew, Geoffrey Tuff and wife, Martha along with 4 grand-nephews, Hunter, Ryder, Quinn and Mason, all of Wellsley, Mass.; niece, Sarah Dunn and husband Carleton along with grand niece, Dillon and grand nephew, Harper, all of Burlington, Vermont; Also surviving are cousin, Rob Newcombe and family, Lincolnville, Maine and cousin, Ann Newcombe, St. Margaret's Bay. Mary was predeceased by her parents and her elder brother, David. Mary's family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to Drs. Neil Bower and David Henderson, Ann McKim and the entire nursing staff of 4 South, Colchester Regional Hospital for the care given to Mary during these final days. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 23 at 2:00 pm in First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro. Interment in Robie Street Cemetery. Family flowers only.
