Born in East Wallace, he was a son of the late William and Winnifred (Jenks) Smith. Chesley was an employee of the Canadian Salt Co. in Malagash and Pugwash for more than 40 years. He was a lobster fisherman and carpenter and could turn his hand to almost any task. Ches was a member of the Wallace Masonic Lodge No. 76, and had proudly received his 50 year Jewel in 1999. He was a member of St. John's United Church, Wallace and a member of Local 823 CEP Union. He was also a former member of Cedar Chapter No. 3, Order of The Eastern Star, Wallace. Ches was dedicated to providing for his family and when snow prevented him from getting to work he would snowshoe two miles and get a ride from there to the salt mine. He was the principal caregiver for his wife, Kaye, for six years and moved with her to East Cumberland Lodge where he continued to care for her. He will always be remembered for his sense of humour and his love of practical jokes. He is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen Coulter; children, sisters, brother, 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Gordon and Lawson. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, with a Masonic Service this evening at 6:30 p.m. in Mundle's Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (243-2506), from where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, Pastor Maureen Ellison and Rev. Morley Bentley officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Wallace River. Donations in memory may be made to the East Cumberland Lodge, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or any charity.
