  • Obituary: Donald W. Christensen, Sr., born August 22, 1932, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, 2014 with his family, at the home of his daughter Nancy-ann, after a two-year long battle with cancer. He was born in Hartford, where he grew up. Donald served in the United States Army during the Korean War, B Company, 9th Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was a full-time fire fighter with the Hartford Fire Department. After moving to Simsbury, he continued as a volunteer fire fighter with the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Department. He also worked for the Town of Simsbury, owned his own construction business, and retired from the United States Postal Service. Donald and his beloved wife, Rosalie, moved to their dream home in Beverly Hills, Florida and later returned to Connecticut in 2009, due to Rosalie's illness. He resided at Metacomet Village in East Granby before moving in with his daughter in Windsor. He was predeceased by his wife, Rosalie G. Christensen; daughter, Cheryl Christensen; and his brothers, Richard Christensen and his wife, Annette, and John E. Christensen and his wife, Lois. He is survived by his brother, Robert Christensen; his children, Donald W. Christensen, Jr. and his wife, Donna, Debra Sigman, John W. Christensen, George D. Christensen and his wife, Fay, Nancy-ann Romanelli and her husband, Michael, and Anthony J. Christensen and his wife, Donna; his grandchildren, Nicole, Lauren, Brooks, Paige, Abby, Nina, Cheyenne, Raymond, Josh, Sean, Jordan, and Leah; and his great-grandchildren, Giovanni and Rosalia. He loved coaching football at Simsbury High School, along with playing golf and participating in several leagues. He especially enjoyed a round of nine holes at Copperhill with his son, Anthony. He also loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing with his sons while on the other hand, he enjoyed being pampered at the spa with his daughter. Recently, he took pride in teaching his granddaughter, Nina, to play his favorite card game, Cribbage. He never missed a season of the UCONN Huskies Girls Basketball. Some of Donald's famous sayings, 'that's cool man,' ' I'd appreciate it,' 'the goodies,' and 'it was when I went to school,' will be missed. Calling hours will be held at Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, on Thursday, July 10, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., closing with a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Burial with full military honors accorded will follow at Simsbury Cemetery.
