  • Obituary: The death of Richard John Tretheway occurred at his home in Watford at 4 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, December 15th. He was a son of the late John Tretheway, whose profession was that of cabinet maker. His grandfather was Richard John Tretheway, a war veteran, who, with his wife, came out from Cornwall, England, as a pioneer and built and lived in a small log cabin on the hill above the present Tretheway home. Mr. Tretheway was in his 84th year when he passed away. His first wife was Miss Henrietta Wheelock, daughter of Artemus Wheelock, of New Germany. She predeceased him on Christmas Eve, twenty-four years ago. The present Mrs. Tretheway was formerly Miss Margaret Mason, of Falkland Ridge, Annapolis County. He leaves to mourn, besides his wife, four daughters, all by his first marriage: (Mary) Mrs. H.B. Molloy, New York; (Jessie) Mrs. R. J. Grey, Shackelton, Saskatchewan; (Minnie) Mrs. M.S. Morrison, Hingham, Massachusetts; and (Ena) Mrs. W.W. Conrad, Montreal; also a sister, (Harriet) Mrs. Starrat, Chicago; and three brothers, Scholyer, New Germany; Charles of Windsor; and Joe, Maine. Mr. Tretheway had eight grand-children and four great grand-children, all of whom are living. The farm on which he lived until the time of his death was built by his grandfather and willed to him. He was the oldest member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in New Germany and was an enthusiastic follower of Lodge events up until the last. He was school secretary for many years in his locality and was formerly a director of the New Germany Warehouse. He was also an honourary director of the LaHave Creamery and was actively interested in public affairs all his life. He will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends, both personal acquaintances and business associates. The funeral took place at his home on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock; the officiating clergyman being Rev. C. MacRae, pastor of the New Germany United Church, assisted by Rev. B.G. Smith, pastor of the Baptist Church. The hymns included "Abide With Me" and "Sun of My Soul." A quartet," Sometime We'll Understand" was rendered by Mr. and Mrs. F.C. DeLong, Mrs. L.L. Nichols, and Mr. L.L. Langille. The floral offerings, including wreaths and sprays from the family and friends, were very beautiful. Interment was made in the Indian Brook Cemetery.
