Notes

  • Obituary: Christian Visitor December 29 1870 Lizzie HOPKINS departed this life 7th Dec. 1870, age 25, at her father's residence, mouth of the Aroostock River, Andover (victoria Co.) She was the d/o Daniel HOPKINS and Catherine HOPKINS. The father is a native of the town of Jefferson, Lincoln Co., Maine and one of a family of 16 children of whom were boys. His father's farm, on which Daniel was born, has been in possession of the same family connection and name for five generations. When Solomon HOPKINS, his father, erected the house now on the farm, some 60 years since, the 12 boys were arranged in line by a neighbor who administered, as was then the custom, a portion of intoxicating liquor to each of the boys. Robert HOPKINS, the eighth son, now 80 years of age, says that was the only intoxicating liquor that he remembers taking. Daniel has lived on his farm in New Brunswick for more than 40 years. It is pleasantly situated extending from the St. John River west over a rise of land containing 300 acres with water to his house and barn. Mr. HOPKINS is now 70 years old. The mother of Lizzie is a native of Nova Scotia. She has lived a happy life, laboring to promote the welfare of her children, ten in number, all healthy until they were of lawful age. Three have died since.
