  • Obituary: Albert M. Snyder, 80, a well-known and longtime resident of Leavenworth, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 30, 1997, in Central Washington Hospital. He was born on Aug. 7, 1917, to Michael and Anna (Stevens) Schneider at Leavenworth, where he grew up and received his early education. In 1936, the family moved to Winton where Al joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and later worked for the Great Northern Railroad. In 1945, they moved to Ollala Canyon where he farmed and also was employed by the U.S. Forest Service. In 1950, he returned to Leavenworth and in 1951, he moved to Portland where he worked in a steel foundry. In 1958, he again returned to Leavenworth and was employed by Peshastin Lumber and Box. On Sept. 5, 1964, he married Lorna McVay Monesmith at Leavenworth. In 1982, he retired from Peshastin Forest Products. Al was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leavenworth, the Leavenworth Senior Citizens Center, Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union No. 2739 and for many years helped with the distribution of government food commodities. He is survived by four stepdaughters, Marian Parsley and Linda Riggs, both of Leavenworth, Janis Monesmith of East Wenatchee and Joyce Wall of Las Vegas; a stepson, David Monesmith of Leavenworth; three brothers, George Schneider of Cashmere and Louie and James Schneider, both of Leavenworth; a sister, Lolly Schneider of Spokane; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna, in March of 1997, one brother, Lester Schneider, one sister, Ruth Baird, and his parents. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of arrangements.
