  • Obituary: Robert the son of Mr and Mrs Lewis W. Curry of Foxboro MA, the husband of Shirley A. Curry and the father of Kristin L. Curry enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 17, 1965. Arriving in Vietnam he was assigned for duty to Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF. On a search and destroy mission during Operation Desoto, the Marines were moving to their night position south of An Diem, when they engaged a concealed VC force. The leading elements engaged the VC with small arms and hand grenades overrunning the enemy and forcing them to flee into heavy brush. Three Marines and a US Navy Corpsman died in the exchange of fire, with another man dying of his wounds after being evacuated. Cpl Curry was one of the casualties, he died as a result of hostile rifle fire. Artillery and fixed wing air strikes were directed on likely enemy targets as the unit moved to another location. During a close air support strike, an air craft dropped its rockets on the Marines position resulting in the death of two men and wounding several others.
