The Milford Cabinet, 4 July 1974, page 15, Obituaries - Ernest E. Phinney - Ernest E. Phinney, 71, of Baboosic Road, Amherst, died Saturday night at his home after a long illness. He was born in Hyde Park, Mass., and had resided in Amherst the past 35 years. Mr. Phinney had operated a sawmill in Amherst many years and was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring as a major after service in World War I and World War II. He served in the Army Engineers in port construction and repair throughout central Europe, northern France and the Ardennes. He was the controller of the building of the bridge over the Rhine. Mr. Phinney had worked along the East Coast building bridges, such as the East Cape Cod Canal. He was a member of the Harley Sanford Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Riccardi - Hartshorn Post American Legion of Milford. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Meridian Lodge F and AM of Franklin. Members of the family include two daughters, Mrs. Doria Trickel of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Jean Parker of Braintree, Mass.; a step daughter, Mrs. Alanson Stevens, Jr., of Vermont; a son, Niel Phinney of Center Port, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Anthony of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. Ethelle Kingsley of New York; two brothers, Walter Phinney of Randolph, Mass., and Lester Phinney of Woburn, Mass.; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Smith and Heald Funeral Home. The Rev. William B. Wylie, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Graveside services were conducted in Meadowview Cemetery, in Amherst. The bearers were Lester Phinney, Walter Phinney, Charles Phinney, Benjamin Parker, Neil Parker and Donald Parker. The flag was folded and presented to Mrs. Jean Parker by Harold Gaffney, past commander of Harley Sanford Post American Legion. The Meridian Lodge of Franklin, N.H., conducted a Masonic service on Sunday evening, at the funeral home. The Smith and Heald Funeral Home, Milford, is in charge of Arrangements.
