Va. 18, about seven miles southeast of here. Killed in the accident were Mrs. Mary Woodburn, 87, and Mrs. Opal Jones, 65, both of Indian Creek. The victims were in a car driven by Mrs. Virginia Woodburn, 43, also of Indian Creek, and daughter-in-law of Mrs. Mary Woodburn. The younger Mrs. Woodburn, wife of Tyler County game warden Alan Woodburn, was taken to Sistersville Hospital in critical condition. Authorities said the Woodburn car collided with a truck driven by Jack Simmons, Parkersburg, who was not injured. Simmons told police his brakes failed as he approached the bridge and the rear of another car which had stopped to allow the Woodburn car to pass. The truck driver said that in order to avoid hitting the stopped car driven by John Willey of New Martinsville, he swerved to the left, hoping that Mrs. Woodburn would see him in time to stop. The accident raised to 103 the number of traffic deaths reported in West Virginia so far this year, compared with 73 this time in 1963.
