Notes

  • Obituary: LAMONT, Douglas Richard C.P.O.(C) - Truro, NS (formerly Halifax, NS). 11 Nov 22 - 16 Apr 15. Born and educated in Truro, Doug was the only child of Richard and Ida (Langille) Lamont. During WW II, Doug served as a Signalman with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, attached to the Seaforth Highlander Infantry Battalion. In Italy, he was wounded resulting in an above-knee amputation. A machinist before the War, while being fitted for his artificial leg, Doug was offered an apprenticeship which lead to being a Certified Prosthetist Orthotist (Canada). In addition to becoming Shop Foreman at Camp Hill Hospital, Doug was involved in many innovations in the manufacture of artificial limbs. Upon embarking on his new career with Veterans Affairs, he also became Branch Treasurer of the War Amputees of Canada. Doug held many posts in the War Amps including President of the NS Branch and Dominion Representative and received the Distinguished Service Award. After nearly 35 years of government service, Doug and his wife Helen retired from Halifax to their country home in Middle Stewiacke and traveled with their Boler trailer. Once again they moved - back to the beginning in Truro. After owning several cottages, they settled at a cottage in Heather Beach on Northumberland Strait. As well, over the years, they traveled across Canada and toured Great Britain. In addition to his sense of humour/story telling, Doug was an accomplished guitarist with mouth organ and honky-tonk piano player. In his later years, Doug wrote and published his memories, The Signalman. In the last 4 years, Doug manufactured 24 large model aeroplane kits. Doug is survived by his only child Sandra Bonita Cunningham (Don) and granddaughter Kim Ellamay Cunningham (Allen Baldwin). He was predeceased by his wife Helen Sara (Rushton). The family would like to offer a special thank you to his caregiver, Lois (Keddy) MacLean, for her many years of devotion. As well, thanks to the staff of 5-W, Camp Hill V M B, for their kindness and care during the last few weeks of Doug's life. The funeral is to be held on Monday, April 20th, at 2:00 pm., at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Church, Truro.
