Born in Beckwith, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late John and Gertrude (Ashade) Barnes. He retired from the Department of Highways in 1988 and also did carpentry work in his earlier years. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, and especially playing cards and telling stories from the past. He loved to laugh. Most important to him was time spent with his family. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Mary (Dixon); daughter, Sharon Keay (John), New Glasgow; sons, Dave (Sadie), Mount Thom; Terry (Dale), Alma; grandchildren, Brian Barnes, Salt Springs; Debi Robben, Truro; Gordie Barnes, Mount Thom; Tony Stevens, Westville; Stephanie Rogerson, Abercrombie; Louanne Keay, Toronto; Billy Joe Keay, Toronto; Marilyn Keay-Fraser, Dartmouth; Cory Barnes, Alma; Kyle Barnes, Alma; 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Ola Lockhart, Oxford; Meletta Geddes, Ontario. He was predeceased by sisters, Ethel Angevine and Leona Mattinson; and brothers, Orland and Lewis. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. His funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday in St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, Salt Springs with Rev. Barb Fotheringham officiating. Burial will be in Stillman Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one's choice.
