  • Obituary: A pillar of one of the foremost tennis families, Joan Elizabeth Sullivan Carder, died Tuesday of a heart attack at her home in Westport. She was 64. Mrs. Carder was one of the Sullivans of Belmont who made their mark not only in New England but nationally. In 1965, the US Tennis Association selected the John F. Sullivan clan for its annual National Tennis Family of the Year award. All four children - Edie, Patricia, Joan, and Paul - were tournament players who competed at the regional and national levels. John Sullivan had a national father-and-son ranking with Paul, a Harvard varsity standout, and John's wife, Edythe, designed and manufactured tennis apparel. A graduate of Leslie College, Mrs. Cardner taught for two decades at the Pierce School in Newton. As a vivacious junior, she held the No. 2 New England and No. 24 US rankings in 1955, along with the No. 9 ranking nationally in doubles with Joan Stockdale of Wellesley. A steady campaigner with a strong forehand on the New England circuit, she reached No. 5 among women in 1958. Her sister, Edie S. McGoldrick, is a former US Wightman Cup captain. Her husband, Jack Carder, died several years ago. Along with her mother of Belmont, and her sister, Edie S. McGoldrick of Wellesley, she leaves a brother, Paul Sullivan of Wayland. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Newton Cemetery.
