Notes

  • Obituary: April 6, 1916 - Priscilla Jane Strattan, beloved wife of Samuel Ridgway Strattan, died at her home in Washington, D.C., on Friday, March 24, 1916. In her girlhood days in this county, she was popularly known as "Scill" Rulofson, being the eldest daughter of Ruloff and Amanda J. Rulofson, of Strattanville, Pa. She was born in Calais, Me., Sept. 12, 1844. In 1886 she was united in marriage to Samuel Ridgeway Strattan of Strattanville. To this union four children were born, namely: Ruloff R., Mabel L., George W. and Edith A., three of whom survive their mother's death, George having died over five years ago. On March 27, 1916, the remains of Mrs. Strattan were deposited in the grave beside that of her beloved son George in beautiful Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, D.C. While the obituary notice in the city news papers stated that the funeral would be private, yet there was a large representation present of the Legion of Loyal Women and Pennsylvania Society of Washington, D.C., both organizations of which she was an active and popular member. The G.A.R. Department of the Potomac was also well represented and sent a beautiful floral tribute. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. T. Ensor, D.D., of Calvary M.E. Church, Mrs. Strattan having been a devout member of that denomination since she was 14 years old. The only brother of the deceased living is William R. Rulofson, of Brookville. Three sisters survive her: Mrs. Jeannette A. McCaslin, of New York City; Mrs. Elizabeth B. Clover, of Clarion; and Mrs. Merta H. Hoover, of DuBois. Mrs. Strattan's parentage on her father's side was of distinguished ancestral stock, dating back for centuries; several members of the family being in the British Army. Her father was born and educated at St. Johns, in Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada, and was married to Amanda Jane Emerson, of St. Stephens, New Brunswick, in 1843. In 1851 he migrated to Pennsylvania, locating at Ridgway, Elk Co., where he engaged in the lumber business under the firm name of Cobb & Rulofson, subsequently moving to Strattanville where he became the junior partner of the lumber firm of Marvin & Rulofson, at the mouth of Millcreek on the Clarion river, continuing in business there until death called him to the other side in 1900. Mrs. Rulofson was a cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the distinguished orator and author. Priscilla Jane Strattan was a kind and devoted mother and of amiable and lovable disposition, and her friends could be counted by the score. Her chief delight seemed to be concentrated in making home pleasant, bright and cheerful for all with whom she was connected. She studied the art and had it mastered to perfection in fact, her home was her heaven on earth, and no sacrifice however great was too exacting for her to patiently endure, if it would but contribute in the least to the well being, comfort or happiness of those she loved. But as the clock struck twelve on Friday, March 24, her spirit took its flight heavenward to meet and greet her loved ones on the golden shore, beyond the dark and silent river, leaving her grief stricken husband and children to mourn their irreparable loss. The Clarion Democrat Clarion,PA April 6,1916.
