  • Obituary: HALIFAX HERALD '96 19 FEB 2001 MacDONALD, Orphy Merinda - 87, of Pictou, passed away Saturday, February17, 2001, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on Grosse Isle, Magdalen Islands, she was a daughter of the late Garfield and Alice (Prest) MacPhail. A devoted mother and neighbour, Orphy was well known for her cooking, and baking, especially her bread. A charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Victory Chapter No. 17, she was also a member of Princess Rebekah Lodge No. 4, Pictou, the Pictou United Church, the United Church Women, and a former member of the New Caledonia Curling Club. She ran a boarding house and a home bakery for many years, and was also Head Cook at the Children's Home, Pictou for over ten years, before retiring. Orphy is survived by her children, Bill (Roslyn), Lake Oswego, Oregon; Gale (Donald) Rutledge, Oakville, Ont.; Wayne (Millie), Murray Harbour, P.E.I.; Winston (Trudy), Ottawa; Dewey (Diane), Caribou; Emma Lee (Jim) MacCormack, Antigonish; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Muriel Battist, Lyons Brook; Blaina Donnelly, Miramachi, N.B.; Joyce Kozecz and Carmen Gass, both of Kingston, Ont.; brothers, Philip, Louisbourg and Garnet, Grand Pré. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice; son, Robert; sister, Ada Jollymore; brothers, Donald, Wourtle, Charlie, George. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Pictou United Church, with Rev. Mary Beth Moriarity officiating. Burial will be in the Seaview Cemetery Donations in her memory may be made to the Diabetes Association or the Shiretown Nursing Home Recreation Dept.
