Bruce was a true patriot, serving his country in World War II and Korea. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 21, 1939, after Nazi Germany invaded Poland in September 1939. He said he saw the handwriting on the wall. He participated in the African-European Campaigns which included the invasion of North Africa through Algeria across into Sicily and then on to landing in Italy. He was discharged September 14, 1945 and joined the Air Force Reserves where he was called up again for service on March 2, 1951 when the Korean Conflict began through August 19, 1954. Bruce's parents were Mathew and Alice Maude Hannel; sister Lois came along six years later. They moved to California's Central Valley and soon moved back to the ocean in the San Francisco area. Bruce graduated from Burlingame High School in June 1939 and started college at San Jose State. After the war years he finished his education in San Jose and Sacramento State Colleges. Bruce started his career for the State of California, working for the Sacramento office of Criminal Identification & Information, then he transfered to the Dept of Motor Vehicles. He also worked as a Hearing Officer here in Eureka, as well as Chairman of the Mayor's Traffic Safety Committee. Bruce worked closely with area police departments, CHP, and Judge John Morrison to try to improve driving problems within the North Coast area. He retired in 1988 and returned to the position when Hugh Paz retired. Bruce again retired in 1994 at the age of 73. Bruce will always be remembered for his wonderful, deep voice and his love of telling stories of his very full and long life. His love of life centered around his family and his church. He was a proud member of Eureka's Second Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His love and commitment to his various positions in the church and to Jesus Christ will also be remembered and respected. Family was always first and foremost in his mind. He had a total of eight children and was proud of them all. Bruce is survived by his wife of forty six years, Georgia L. Hannel and their two sons Bruce M. (Luciana) Hannel Jr. of Utah and Scott M.
