  • Obituary: James "Jim" Albert Rippey, age 81, of Windsor, Hants County, passed away on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on October 10th, 1927, in Berwick, Kings County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late James "Jim" and Alice (nee: Sulis) Rippey. Jim was educated at the Windsor Academy, the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology (Machinist), and the Marine Institute (Marine Engineer Ticket, 1st Class). He had formerly worked in several Maritime Garages, and with the NS Light & Power, Halifax. He had also owned and operated Rippey's Service Station, Falmouth. Jim had sailed on the Gypsum Boats, and retired from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography as the Chief Engineer of the CSS Hudson in 1987. Jim enjoyed telling numerous stories to his friends, family, and most often using short and colorful words. Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Mary Louise Horsnell; his children, Marlene L. Rippey Jones (John Bishop), Washington, DC; Kenneth C. Rippey (Patti Trinacity), Windsor; Helen B. Hayden (Henry Mah), Dartmouth; Dani V. Rippey (Janice nee: Rafuse), Martock; Gayle E. Rippey (Gordon Murray), Scotch Village; daughter-in-law, Jocelyn (nee: Strum) Rippey, Black Rock Road; grandchildren, Jamie Leighton, Dr. Jan L. Jones, L. Robert Jones, John Paul Jones, Carolyn E. Jones, R. Neal Jones, Gayle C. Jones, Natalie Rippey, Sam Hayden, Sasha Rose, Jenna Rippey, Melanie Ross, Fraser James Murray, Alice Anand and Daryl Murray; 8 great grandchildren; his siblings, Joyce Jewers, Dartmouth; Marian (Bert) McQuade, Uxbridge, Ontario; Jean Rippey, Dartmouth; Sam (Eleanor) Rippey, Newmarket, Ontario. Besides his parents, James "Jim" and Alice (nee: Sulis) Rippey; he was predeceased by a son, James W. Rippey; sister, Gladys Newkirk; brothers-in-law, Harold Newkirk and Sidney Jewers. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral, 194 King Street. Windsor. Family and friends are welcome at the Rippey home, on Thursday. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, February 6th, 2009, in the Windsor United Church, King Street, with the Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Interment will be held at the Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor.
