  • Obituary: BEATTIE (Young) (Phinney), Gertrude Irene - 97, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at her home in Wolfville. Born in Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co., in 1909, she was a daughter of the late Horton and Florence (Purdy) Phinney. She graduated from Wolfville High School in 1925, attended Dalhousie University, then graduated from Acadia University, B.Sc. in H.Ec. in 1932 and B.Ed. in 1981 (50 years later). She received diplomas in Halifax Shorthand School and Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, in nutrition in 1933. She was a member of the Halifax Conservatory Orchestra, Dalhousie Orchestra, and organist at Lawrencetown Baptist Church for several years. She taught home economics at Lawrencetown High School for 20 years. She was a member of the famous X-Dal Basketball Team, Maritime Champions in 1927, that traveled to Edmonton to play for the Canadian Championship against the "Edmonton Grads". In 1927, 28 and 29, she won 40 gold and 8 silver medals in track and field, three Canadian records, and one gold and two silver medals in the first Canadian Olympic trials in 1928; Dalhousie University presented her with the first "Gold D" in 1929, and the prestigious "Dalhousie Award" in 1982 for "Outstanding Athletic Achievement". She was "one of the originals" inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame when it was organized in 1958, the Nova Scotia Sport Heritage Centre in 1980, the Kings County Sports Hall of Fame in 1980, and Acadia University Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. She was very active in Home and School Association and church organizations. In 1934, she married F. Brannan Young of Lawrencetown. He died in 1974. In 1978, she married Thomas A. Beattie of Wolfville. She is survived by sons, Fred (Betsy), Wolfville; Harold (Delores), Ottawa; Richard (Bev) Young, Ottawa; daughters, Bette Bruce, Nictaux; Carol (Dale) Selig, Wolfville; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; stepson, Alan (Ann) Beattie, Calgary; two step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Brannan Young; her second husband, Thomas Beattie; brothers, Harold and Norman Phinney; sister, Bernice Frizzle. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Wolfville Baptist Church on Saturday, April 29, at 11 a.m., with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wolfville Baptist Church or the charity of choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to H.C.
