  • Obituary: NOTED HISTORIAN DIES IN PUGWASH TREEN, Arthur Elmer--97, Malagash, died Thursday in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Malagash, he was a son of the late Howard and Elizbeth (Phillips) Treen. He lived most of his life in Malagash,except for a few years in the Canadian West. A farmer and fisherman, he was employed part-time with the Malagash Salt Company. He was a noted historian and a member of the North Cumberland Historical Society and at 95 published a book on Northern Nova Scotia. For more than 40 years he was secretary-treasure of the Malagash Agriculture Society. He was a member of Malagash United Church and sang in the choir for over 60 years. He was a charter member of Cumberland Lodge IOOF #147 and had received a 60-year jewel from Rebekkah Lodge. He is survived by his wife, the former Annie Stevens; a son, Howard, Malagash, six daughters; Dorothy (Mrs. Layton Ryan), Conns Mills; Anna (Mrs. Bruce Farnsworth), Richmond,BC; Mrs. Bertha Langille, Malagash; Cecilia (Mrs. Herbie MacNeil, Sydney River; Grace (Mrs. Dave Speakman), Tatamagouche, two sisters, Lillian (Mrs. Mitch Byers, Malagash; Mrs. Helen Coleman, Massachusetts; a brother, Henry, Los Angeles; 33 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Harold; two grandchildren, four brothers; two sisters; a half sister. The body is in Coulter's Funeral Home, Tatamagouche, with visiting 2-4 pm and 7-9pm today. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. In lieu offlowers, donations may be made to any charity. Hand written on obituary notice: " Nov. 19. 1987, Funeral Nov. 22, 1987"
