Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Lorne Campbell and Rebecca (Ferguson) Weatherbee. He will always be remembered as a soft-spoken, friendly person with a dry sense of humour. Herman was an adventurer and was known to his closest friends as "Rabbit". Sponsored by Stanfield's, he and his close friend "Bunny" walked and hitch-hiked across Canada at the age of 24. He worked for two years at the Lewis Hat Factory before joining the army in 1941. A veteran of the Second World War, Herman went overseas in 1941 with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was injured during his tour of duty. On his return he began his career with the Post Office where he served for 32 years before retiring. After his retirement, he worked at the Truro Club, where he was made an honorary member. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 47 years, the North Nova Memory Club, the Heritage Club, the Rifle Association, and Truro Seniors League. He had a passion for hunting and fly-fishing and was a world traveler (he visited his favourite country, Cuba, more than 17 times). His father was one of Truro's first barbers and owners of the former Weatherbee Tourist Cabins on Willow Street. Herman, along with his wife Catherine, was a well-known and friendly face around town especially at "the mall" and bingo. He was also a letter writer for "Santa Claus" for the last 20 years through the Post Office.
