  • Obituary: Helen Margaret Hatt Johnson was born July 12, 1920 in Imperoyal, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada to Harrington William Hatt and Reta Elizabeth Brenton Hatt. She passed away March 28, 1975 at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah, USA as a result of a brain tumor. She was the youngest of two daughters. Helen was a life long teacher, teaching mostly at the high school and college levels. She was a graduate of Dalhousie University (1941), BA, BEd; and of Brigham Young University (1968) MEd. She was president of the Relief Society, the Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association and served as Branch Organist of the Latter Day Saints Church in Nova Scotia; and was a member of the Ward Choir of the church in Provo. She was a member of Western College Reading Association; American Vocational Association; and a director of the pre-technical program at Utah Technical College. She married Douglas Henry Johnson on April 11, 1944, before World War II ended. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Cardston, Alberta, LDS Temple. They were the parents of five children, one son (Brenton, Tremonton, UT) and four daughers (Marianna, Orem, UT; Anita, Clearfield, UT; Claire, Orem, UT and Shelley, Provo, UT). The family lived in Nova Scotia until 1966 when they moved to Provo, Utah where she and Doug attended BYU. She and Doug were accomplished ballroom dancers, having studied under Roy and June Mavor. She was survived by her father, Harrington Hatt (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada); her sister, Frances Hatt (Canton, Massachusetts); her husband, 5 children and 7 grandchildren.
