Notes

  • Obituary: Hardy Ronald Lutz, 86, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2022 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Berwick to Azie and Florence (Palmer) Lutz, he grew up on the family farm in Rockland. Of his 15 siblings, he was the oldest at home when his father died, and he took over responsibility for his mother, five younger siblings, and the family farm. He had a special relationship with his brother, Ronnie, who he cared for all of his life. In addition to the farm, Hardy worked for the Department of Highways driving a truck, was in the Canadian Reserves, drove a school bus for Perry Rand Ltd., and worked at Huyck Canada for close to 30 years. He had a love of the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman in his early years and particularly enjoyed working in his garden, cutting wood, and picking apples. With a sharp wit and a keen sense of humour, he loved to tell and hear jokes and stories. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest source of pride and he loved reading to and playing with them and keeping up on their latest interests and accomplishments. Hardy is lovingly survived by his wife of 61 years, Jessie (Hodges); daughter, Nancy (Colin) MacKinnon, Sackville, NB; son, Larry (Janice) Lutz, Rockland; grandchildren, Andrew (Amy) MacKinnon, Neil (Gabrielle) MacKinnon, Emily (Cassian) Lutz, Tom (Amanda) Lutz, Danielle (Greg) Lutz, Sam (Luci) Lutz; great-grandchildren, Everett, Azie, and Wyla Ferlatte and Evelyn and Ewan MacKinnon; brother, Robert (Maureen) Lutz, Coldbrook; sisters, Janice (Robert) Dunn, South Berwick; Carolyn (Bill) Schrage, Orleans, ON; Marina (Charles) Hudson, Salisbury, NB; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Hardy was predeceased by his brothers, Carleton (Pauline), Whitney, and Ronnie; sisters, Bessie Stoddard, Bertha (Morris) Keddy, Carrie (Wilfred) Carver, Doris Palmer, Helen (Robert) Wilson, Margaret (John) Palmer, Marie (Maurice) Carver, and Rose (Ken) Boyd. There will be no visitation, by request. A graveside service will take place in the Berwick Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9, 2022. Attendees are asked to be fully vaccinated, wear a mask and respect social distancing, out of consideration for the well-being of others. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair should they wish to sit during the service. For those unable to attend, a video webcast of the service will be available on Tuesday, May 10. Donations in Hardy's memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley VON, Valley Regional Hospital, and the Canadian Cancer Society. A special thank you to the VON, Angels Homecare, and Valley Regional Hospital staff for their care of Hardy.
