Born in East Folly Mountain, he was a son of the late Leonard and Stella (Totten) Slack. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas from 1942 to 1945 as a sergeant with the infantry. Joe lived and worked in Ontario for 30 years following the war as a welder and hydraulic technician. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #106, Debert and a member of the Debert Volunteer Fire Brigade for 26 years. Joe served on the board of directors for the Debert Military Historical Society and was a member of the Debert Community Council. He is survived by his wife, Jean (Reid); son, Shane (Wanda), Debert; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Lloyd, Peterborough, ON; sisters, Fran Foreman, Debert; Dorothy Barnhill, Belmont; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Cheryl McMurter; grandson, Lenny; sisters, Lois and Grace. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 7-9 pm in Debert United Church, with a Debert Volunteer Fire Brigade Tribute Service at 6:45 pm. Funeral service will be Thursday at 2:00 pm, also in Debert United Church, followed by a Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service, all with Rev. Don MacQueen officiating. Reception will follow in the Debert Fire Hall. Interment will be in Folly Mountain Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Debert Military Historical Society or the Debert Volunteer Fire Brigade. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro.
