  • Obituary: Olive Rose (Sutherland) Carter - 95, Blomidon Court, Greenwich, formerly of Tideways, Wolfville, slipped peacefully and with dignity into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Rose was born at Copper Cliff Farm, Copper Lake, Antigonish County. A daughter of the late Arthur and Olive (Ross) Sutherland, she spent her childhood and early school years at Copper Lake. At age 12, Rose joined Kings United Church and Choir in Loch Katrine, Antigonish Co. This was a membership she maintained throughout her life. Music was an important part of her family, church and school life. Her family, her cousins and friends, her love of the country life and her farm home filled Rose's childhood with happy memories. She re-lived and shared these memories her whole life. These memories kept her coming back to the farm for visits and summers. She passed that love for the old homestead on to the next generations of her family. In 1936, Rose graduated from Teachers' (Normal) College in Truro. Her first teaching position was in Port Bickerton with 52 students in ten grades. She then taught in Copper Lake, New Town, Sherbrooke, Debert, Upper Belmont, Onslow and Colchester Junior High, for a total of 35 years. Rose was a life long learner; continuing her education while teaching, through evening and summer school classes at St. Frances Xavier, St. Mary's and Acadia Universities. During this time there were many changes in curriculum, schools and methods. The numerous visits, calls, and cards from former students who have kept in touch over the years is a testament to the many lives she touched and enriched during her teaching career. When the Second World War was underway, Rose resigned from teaching to become a Civil Servant in the Dominion Treasury in Ottawa. She worked in the Dept. of Finance as an Inspector of Veteran Allowances and later in the East Block of the Parliament Building. In 1947, she returned to Nova Scotia to marry Harris Carter of Debert. Harris was a veteran serving with the DND in Camp Debert. Rose soon became an active member of Debert Baptist Church, singing in their choir and serving as organist over the next forty years. With limited formal musical training, Rose felt God gave her this musical gift to use where she was needed. Over the years Rose participated in Philathea Class, was a life member of the United Baptist Women's Missionary Society, encouraged Royal Canadian Legion activities with her husband and worked on community activities such as Debert Field Day. She remained faithful in her commitment to Christ and felt her love of Bible studies enriched her faith. In later years her Bible was always near her easy chair. In 1997, Rose and Harris celebrated 50 years of marriage. From an early age Rose took much pleasure in sewing. She enjoyed designing and making clothes for herself and her family members. When needed, she often made items of clothing for her students. Over the years Rose made many beautiful quilts, often giving them to family members and others who appreciated this craft. Rose's love of geography, travel and geneology are other legacies she has passed to her family. Rose was a Founding Member of Nova Scotia's Clan Sutherland. When the Clan Chief Lord Strathnaver visited Nova Scotia, she presented him and his wife with an originally designed quilt she had made to commemorate the occasion. It now hangs in the Clan Room at Dunrobin Castle in Golspie, Scotland. Rose will be remembered by many for her hospitality, homemade baking and willingness to help where and when needed. In 1994, Rose and her husband Harris retired to Wolfville to live nearer their daughter, Lynn. She loved to keep in touch with former neighbours, friends and relatives. Those news filled letters written in her lovely penmanship will be missed, along with their individuality and charm. Rose loved to write, and most of her writings, including many short stories, contained Irish or Scottish historical details. She was a member of the South Shore Literary Club, of Liverpool, NS and received several recognitions for her work. Between 1984 and 2002 Rose researched, wrote and published three books. Always interested in Pioneer History in Nova Scotia, she wrote her first book about her Scottish family called "Unto the Hills". She sorted out family trees and details of their determination and hardships as they left life in Scotland for opportunities in New Scotland. In 2000, she coauthored another history with her husband including information about his Planter ancestors titled "Early Carter Settlers to the Londonderry NS Township". Her third book, "Ripples from Copper Lake" contains many stories of pioneer life as told by descendents from her home area. She completed this book in 2002 at the age of 85. Rose was also a voracious reader her entire life and in recent years this activity continued to keep her entertained. Throughout her life Rose loved and cherished her family, both immediate and extended. It is impossible to express all the ways she has blessed and impacted our lives. In her husband's memory she remained his red-haired brown eyed beauty; to her daughter she passed on her zest for life, her strong work ethic, Christian beliefs and the gift of laughter. Rose gave her heart and hopes to the children of the next generations. The memory of her brings only the sweetest of thoughts and feelings to her family. We will build upon, and treasure, the life lessons that we learned from Rose. In our memory we will cherish the tenderness of your loving spirit, your infectious smile, your generous heart, your love of God and family and the way you longed for heaven. Rose will be deeply missed by daughter, Rosalynn Campbell, New Minas; grandchildren, Kimberley (Charles) Purcell, Bedford; Aaron Campbell, Canaan Mountain and Brazil; great-grandsons, Adam, Colin, and Eric Purcell, Bedford; sister, Isabel Stephens, Truro; nephews, Blaise (Basil) MacDonald, Antigonish; John (Linda) Sutherland, Lakeland, California; John (Madeline) Stone, Onslow; Aubrey Coulter, Toronto; Charles (Wanda) Stephens, Orlando, Florida; Robert Stephens, Nottingham, UK; Thomas Stephens, Truro and China; nieces, Jean Jones, Las Vegas, Nevada; Sheron (Ken) Gravelle; Thunder Bay, ON; Joyce (Bob) Scallion; Redding, California; Stephanie (David) MacNeil, Truro; Rose Morewood, Halifax. She was predeceased by: Harris, her husband of 54 years; son-in- law, Robert Campbell; infant sister, Rebecca; brothers, Malcolm, George and Stanley Sutherland; brother-in-law, Don Stephens; sisters-in-law, Peggy, Gertie, and Myrtle Sutherland.
