Parents Father: PARKER, Maynard Roy Mother: COCHRANE, Eva Madge Birth Born on April 27, 1925 in Windsor, Hants Co., NS Death Died on April 24, 1945 in At Sea Buried in Odder Sogns Churchyard in Odder, Denmark Notes Military Service: Flying Officer - Navigator/Bomber 58 (RAF) Squadron,RCAF Historical Information: Maynard was one of a 9-member crew of HAL JP336 that set out on a mission on Apr 23, 1945. At midnight the plane spotted a German convoy from Norway, were attacked and heavily damaged by flak. The pilot tried to reach land, but the plane had to ditch about 1 nautical mile northeast of Gjerrild in Djursland. It floated, burning, for half an hour. The fire was seen from land, but nobody sailed out to their rescue. Four of the men were able to escape from the burning plane (F/O Davey, F/Sgt Thomas Ernest Parker Rosenthal and wireless operators F/O John Vilhjalmur Johnson and Sgt Gerard Anthony Guinane). The survivors inflated their dinghy and rowed around to find the other 5 crew members, but in vain. They could see the coast of Denmark, but the wind came from the west and the current quickly took them off the coast. F/Sgt Rosenthal died in the following night, and as the dinghy leaked he had to be buried at sea; he later drifted ashore at Svarthall. After 36 hours the airmen in distress were finally spotted by a German observation post on Anholt and two Danish fishing boats "Vera" and "Hafnia" were sent out to pick up the 3 airmen. In Nov of that year, Maynard's body washed ashore south of Rude Strandhotel (now Pensionisthøjskolen Rude Strand). 3 airmen from HAL JP336 are buried in Odder, 1 in Sweden, 2 have no known graves and the 3 survivors were taken to German POW-Camps.
