  • Obituary: O'Brien, Bertha Elizabeth '96 92, Lower Truro It is with great sadness that the family of Bertha E. O'Brien announce her passing on June 11, 2011 peacefully in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro with her family by her side. Born on November 15, 1918 in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Jean (Kent) Ogilvie. She was a member of Old Barns United Church. Bertha was a terrific mother to her five children. At the age of 40, she attended Normal College where she earned a diploma in teaching Kindergarten to grade two. Over the twenty years Bertha taught in Willow Street School, she inspired a lifelong interest in science and social studies in many of her pupils. Mom was an accomplished dressmaker, making many outfits for her children over the years. The family loved her wonderful piano playing and her gift of writing poetry and stories. In the last few years she really enjoyed her bridge games with her friends, Jean, Beth and Betty. Bertha "also known as Mimi" is survived by her son, Don (Elaine), Langley, British Columbia; daughter, Carol (David) Baird, Lower Truro; daughter-in-law, Leslie MacIntosh O'Brien, Guelph, Ont.; her grandchildren, Terry, Jordan (Meridyth), Natalie (David), Paul (Paul), Craig, Shawn, Ethan, Darren, Steven (Lyndsay), Heather (Kurt), Torrey (Cory), Brandon (Jane) and Sherri; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Alexandra, Matthew, Morgan, Noa and Taia; sister, Doris Hillier, Eastern Passage; brothers, Stewart Ogilvie, Truro, Alan (Sally) Ogilvie, San Diego, California. She was predeceased by daughter, Marjorie O'Brien Taylor; sons, Eric and Ken; sisters, Nora, Shirley, Melba and Charlotte. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 18 from 2:30 until time of the funeral service at 3:30 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Ian Harrison officiating. Interment in Robie Street Cemetery. Donations in Bertha's memory may be made to Maggie's Place '96 A Resource Center For Families, 129 Arthur Street, Truro, N.S. B2N 1Y2, the Victorian Order of Nurses or a charity of choice.
