Notes

  • Obituary: Flora Marie Joyce (nee Buchanan), 88, of Lower Truro passed away July 1, 2013. Flora was born in Ingonish, Cape Breton, on March 23, 1925, the second of five daughters to Katherine (nee McLean) and George Buchanan. Flora spent her youth in Ingonish and moved to Truro in 1943. In 1955 she moved to Ottawa where she worked in yard goods at A.J. Freiman Ltd. In 1959 she married Ron Joyce of Lower Truro and returned to Truro where she worked at Bentley's Department Store on Robie St. In 1960 her first son Paul was born, followed soon after by the arrival of Shannon in 1961 and Glen in 1963 and Flora spent the rest of her life caring for and raising children. In addition to her children there usually were foster children or neighbour's children under her care. She often commented that she was never so happy as when looking after "four under four". Flora was an active member of the Old Barns United Church where she especially enjoyed her involvement with the nursery. In 1972 she moved to New Glasgow when her husband was offered the job of postmaster. While in New Glasgow she continued to care for children in her home and in the nursery of Trinity United Church where she was a member. In 1980 she returned to Lower Truro. In her later years she was especially happy to have frequent visits from her granddaughters, Rochelle and Shantelle, and more recently from her grandson, Anton. Along with her parents, Flora is predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Ron, and an infant son Ronald Jr. She is survived by her sisters Sylvia (Toronto), Betty (Paul) vanSteinburgh (Toronto), Ella (Toronto) and Kaye (Des) Mataga (New Zealand), her children Paul (Pam) Joyce (Montreal), Shannon (Steve) McCabe (Belmont) and Glen (Truro), her grandchildren Rochelle and Shantelle Roberts and Antonin Joyce, and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service for immediate family will be held Sunday, July 7, in Old Barns Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Old Barns United Church. The family wishes to thank the staff at Cedarstone Enhanced Care and the Truro Hospital for their excellent care. Arrangements entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro where on-line condolences may be made at www.ColchesterCommunity.com
