  • Obituary: PYE, Emma Katherine '96 99, of Halifax, passed away Monday December 31, 2012 at Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax. Born in Falmouth N.S., June 2, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (Wilson) Manning. Predeceased by her husband, Stuart Allison Pye, and brothers Randolph and John Manning, she is survived by daughters Margaret Arnaudin (Christian), Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and Elaine Kennedy (André Boulay), Tatamagouche; grandchildren Douglas Deveau, Halifax; Anne Deveau Corbett (Edward), Sackville, N.S. and Élise Arnaudin Luchetta (Davide), Argenta, B.C.; great grandchildren Micah Luchetta and Christopher, Edward, Jennifer and Stephen Corbett; great-great granddaughters Jordyn and Peyton; sister-in-law Mary Manning, Halifax, brother-in-law Gerald Neveu, Ottawa, and her nieces and nephews. Kaye studied music from an early age, notably at Kings Edgehill School in Windsor and Mount Allison Ladies' College, later studying piano with Dorothy Wilson and organ with Edwin Collins of Acadia University. She furthered her organ studies with Dr. Maitland Farmer of Halifax. She obtained her Licentiate in piano from the Royal School of Music of London and Associate in organ from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. She began her career as a church organist at a very early age, in Falmouth. She was organist of St. John's United Church, Windsor for 20 years. In Halifax she was organist and choir director of St. John's United Church, St. George's Anglican Church and J. Wesley Smith Church. She taught piano in Falmouth and Windsor and at the Maritime Conservatory of Music in Halifax. She was also a teacher of organ and music theory. While in Windsor, she was the chief organizer of the Hants Co. Music Festival. For nearly 30 years she served as Secretary Treasurer of the Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers' Association. She was the archivist and an executive member of the Alumni of the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. On becoming involved with the Atlantic Ministry to the Deaf she took up signing. With her husband, Al, she enjoyed square dancing, schooner racing in LaHave and family vacations at Pye's Head, Liscomb. She was an active member of St. George's Church and at age 99 continued to exercise at the YMCA. Of a selfless, compassionate and unaffected nature, she was greatly admired for her dedication and loyalty, and the thoroughness which characterized all of her undertakings. Donations in her memory may be made to St. George's Round Church, Halifax or to the scholarship fund of the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, Halifax. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Sunday January 6 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday January 7 at St. George's Round Church, 2222 Brunswick St., Halifax, N.S. B3K 2Z2.
