  • Obituary: Ella Mounce,93, of Avondale Road, Newport Landing, Nova Scotia and recently of The Berkeley, Bedford, N.S. passed away on January 31.Born in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Ella was the daughter of the late John and Mary Luther. She graduated from Sydney Academy and from Normal College in Truro, she taught in Cape Breton County for number of years. She went back to Acadia and obtained her BA after which she took a teaching position with the Halifax School Board. It was while teaching in Halifax that she was approached by the Halifax school board regarding a new program that was being introduced helping students who had learning disabilities. Ella agreed to accompany another teacher from the area to Purdue University in Indiana, USA, where the new program was being taught. On their return the new program was introduced to their school. The following summer she was sent to Columbia in New York for follow-up studies and the program was extended throughout the Halifax school system. Ella spent the rest of her career teaching "Special Ed" between many different schools in the Halifax Area. Ella was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon Bowes of Halifax and her second husband George Mounce of Newport Landing. Ella was also predeceased by her only sister Lois Meloney and her brother-in-law Sid Meloney of North Sydney. She is survived by her nieces, Pat Meloney and Norma Bell of Dover, New Hampshire, Karen and Mike Landry, Bedford and three nephews, Bruce and Lizz Meloney, North Sydney, Ross and Jan Meloney, Chicago, Il, Sid and Carolyn Meloney of Calgary plus several grand nieces and nephews Lynn, Kate (Marcus), Nicholas, Jonathan, Stephen, Mallory, Daniel, Lauren and Kendall plus her great grand nephew Mason Zwicker. She is also survived by her step children from her husbands, Gordon and George and their families plus many friends in the Windsor /Halifax area. At her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service with reception to follow, will take place at Windsor United Church on King St., Windsor ,N.S on Monday Feb 4th at 2 pm officiated by Rev Bill Gibson. Final interment will take place later in the summer in Sydney, Nova Scotia . Funeral arrangements entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home in North Sydney.
