Notes

  • Occupation: Teacher/ School Principal
  • Election: City Councillor
  • Obituary: A loving man, norm was the husband of Gloria for 49 years. Father of Beth Walpole (Chris Coates), Maureen Varao (John) and Sean Walpole (Karen). Cherished grandfather of Troy, Zach and Madison and brother to Laurene Corning. Predeceased by brothers Willis and Keith. Norm earned his B.A. from McMaster and Bachelor and Masters in education from O.I.S.E., University of Toronto. He served as principal for Walpole North, South, Northview and Parkview in the Haldimand School Board. He was a tireless volunteer and advocate for change. Thanks to an early retirement he was able to travel extensively throughout Canada with his wife Gloria. In his spare time, he enjoyed carpentry and household projects. Norm was active in the local NDP for many years and stood in as a candidate in elections in Haldimand-Norfolk at a time when his party stood little chance of success. It meant hours of campaigning on top of his job as an elementary school principal during an era in which the principal both taught and did administrative work. Walpole, however, was committed to his causes, say those who knew him. In 2006 he went to the NDP national convention to propose the party adopt to its election platform a guaranteed national income for all Canadians. "He was very committed to social justice and a fairer society. Walpole made it to office in the early 1990s when he was elected as a councillor for the former City of Nanticoke. Walpole, who spent most of his career in Haldimand, started teaching at age 18 in a one-room schoolhouse in Stayner, Ont., near Collingwood.
