  • Obituary: Victoria Elizabeth ``Beth' (Lancaster) Richmond passed away September 5, 2004, at St. David's Hospital in Austin, Texas. She was 88 years old. Beth was born September 18, 1915, to James Andrew and Lizzie Manning Lancaster in San Marcos, Texas, the youngest of seven children. She spent her childhood in San Marcos and graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now Texas State University) in 1936. Beth taught high school English in Kyle, Texas, for two years. While boarding with the Richmond family in Kyle, Beth met and fell in love with Thomas Rollin Richmond. They married on June 8, 1938, and were married for 56 years until Rollin's death in 1994. Beth and Rollin lived in Bryan, Texas, where Beth was a homemaker and Rollin worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and for Texas A&M University. Beth lived in Bryan for 58 years where she still had many close friends. She was active in her P.E.O. Chapter BG since 1964 (Chapter President 1970-71) in College Station and was a longtime member of the A&M United Methodist Church. In 1996 she moved to Sun City Georgetown, Texas where she participated in the activities of the retirement community and made many new friends. Beth enjoyed her family and her many wonderful friends. She was an avid reader, a marvelous letter writer, and an expert in grammar. She had a zest for living that was contagious. She loved playing bridge, hiking in Colorado, sailing, telling a good joke, politics, lively discussions, playing bocce ball in Sun City, and traveling all over the world. Her most recent trip abroad was a family trip to Italy when she was 82. Beth is survived by her four children: daughter Jane Benasutti and husband Joe of Austin, Texas, daughter Claire Atkins and husband Richard of Grand Junction, Colorado, son Tom Richmond and wife Janet of Rockwall, Texas, and daughter Susan Bryce of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: David and John Robison, Anne Robison Matt, Tom and Sam Atkins, Kay Richmond Judge, T.R. Richmond III, Dr. Vicki Richmond Smithers, and Jeff Richmond; ten great-grandchildren; two nephews and four nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Rollin, grandson Stephen Atkins, her parents, her sister and five brothers. Visitation will be held at the new Memorial Funeral Chapel, 2901 Texas Avenue South, College Station, Texas, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2004. A memorial service will be held at the A&M United Methodist Church, 417 University Avenue, College Station, Texas at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday September 8, 2004. Services will be performed by the Rev. Bob E. Waters, followed by burial at the Bryan City Cemetery. After the burial, family and friends are invited to gather at the Jim Beard home at 405 Brookside Drive, Bryan, Texas, to greet the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hugh Joseph Matt Childrens Fund, Central New York Community Foundation, 500 South Salina Street, Suite 428, Syracuse, New York 13202 or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 8500 North MoPac Expressway, Suite 401, Austin, Texas 78759.
