Notes

  • Obituary: Donald MacLeod Joyce … 89, Lower Truro, passed away peacefully at home, following a short illness, on Friday, July 16, 2010. Born September 2, 1920, in Lower Truro, where he has spent his entire life, he was a son of the late Blair and Annie (Dickie) Joyce. Along with his parents, Don was predeceased by his brothers, Douglas, Kenneth; twin brother, Ron. He is survived by his nieces, Sheryl (Jack) Manning, Lynne (Don) Pryor, Shannon (Steve) McCabe; nephews, Dr. Paul (Pam) Joyce, Glenn. Vegetable farming was always an important part of Don's life. He grew up working on his father's farm, spent many hours in the garden and learned many gardening skills from his father. His garden was always his labour of love, especially in his later years. Don spent many hours looking out the sun-porch window and enjoyed watching the farming that was going on around him. He also quite enjoyed working with wood … cutting, sawing, piling or putting in the winter's supply of firewood. In his younger years, he worked at various farming and wood jobs. He spent many hours exercising his talents in his workshop. He had natural skills in using his forge and shaping various iron pieces. He built many hay wagons, dump carts and equipment used by area farmers. Don worked for many years at Colchester Co-op from where he retired in 1985. He delivered feed and supplies to various farms in the surrounding area and enjoyed meeting the people and seeing the countryside. Don was a member of Cobequid District Fire Brigade for a number of years and helped build the original building. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, July 19, 2010, Reverend Ian Harrison officiating.
