  • Obituary: The ChronicleHerald.ca DALRYMPLE, Russell John '97 Born October 13, 1922, Russell died peacefully in his sleep September 13, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital, one month shy of his 87th birthday. Born in Milford, he was a son of the late John Christie and Pearl Dalrymple. Russell was raised and educated in Elmsdale. In 1939 he began his career with Imperial Oil at the Dartmouth Refinery as a pipefitter and machinist, working his way through TUNS to advance to senior management. He retired from there in 1987 and then enjoyed a long and happy retirement with Gertrude, his wife of 65 years. He was a founding member, and Deacon of South End United Baptist Church, founding member of Elmsdale Baptist Church and a founding member of Dartmouth Community Credit Union where he held positions on their board of directors for many years. He enjoyed rock hounding, jewellery making, RV travel, snow-birding to Florida, stamp collecting, playing bridge and cribbage; was a champion bowler, avid fisherman, gardener, enjoyed cruising to the Caribbean and playing with his granddaughters, Dawn and Trish and in later years his great-grandchildren, Jacob, Lucas and Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude (Wilson); son, Albert (Margaret); daughters, Linda Williams (Gerald), Margaret Carter (Stephen); grandson, Cail Robert Dalrymple (Jenny); granddaughters, Dawn Boutilier (Ken), Trish Giles (Chris) and Tracy Penney (Dave); great-grandchildren, Jacob and Lucas Boutilier, Taylor Giles, Bobby Jr. Dalrymple, Emily and Evan Penney; sisters, Ruth Howlett, Shirley Rogers, and brother, Laurie Dalrymple (Lorraine) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Roy Dalrymple. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 6:30- 8:30 p.m. Thursday, September 17, in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 18, in South End Baptist Church, 60 Hastings Dr., Dartmouth. Interment to follow in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses of 3 East, Dartmouth General Hospital. Family flowers only, charitable donations may be sent to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, South End United Baptist Church or charity of choice.
